Educational Objectives

The Graduate School of Clinical Psychology, Kagoshima University has as its educational objective the cultivation of expert clinical psychologists who possess in-depth academic knowledge, first-rate abilities and outstanding professional ethics, and who are capable of providing psychological support tailored to the psychological needs of Japan’s citizens.

Degree Conferment Policy

In line with Kagoshima University’s degree conferment policy and the Graduate School’s educational objectives, the Graduate School of Clinical Psychology confers a professional Master’s degree on those students who have acquired the following capabilities and have successfully completed the specified units:

  1. Acquisition of the ability to provide psychological counseling as an expert professional in the field of clinical psychology with a sense of duty and a high level of professional ethics.
  2. Acquisition of the ability to provide psychological diagnosis and counseling to individuals, groups and organizations.
  3. Acquisition of the ability to provide psychological counseling based on a thorough understanding of local history and culture.
  4. Acquisition of the ability to undertake case studies and explore new issues.
  5. Acquisition of the ability to perform a supervisory role in the field of clinical psychology.

Curriculum Policy

In line with the Graduate School’s degree conferment policy, the Graduate School of Clinical Psychology, Kagoshima University has formulated, and implements, a systematic curriculum for inculcating the in-depth knowledge and outstanding skills required of expert professionals in the field of clinical psychology.

  1. We provide an education which systematically cultivates the in-depth academic knowledge and outstanding skills required in order to provide specialist psychological counseling as an expert professional in the field of clinical psychology.
  2. We provide an education which incorporates practical training, both within the university and outside, and which cultivates the sense of duty and high ethical standards required of an export professional in the field of clinical psychology who is rooted in the local community.
  3. We provide an education which cultivates the ability to play a supervisory role as a practitioner in the field of clinical psychology.

Admission Policy

1. The type of people that we are looking for:
  • Individuals who are eager to acquire specialist expertise in the field of clinical psychology
  • Individuals who are eager to acquire practical skills in the field of clinical psychology
  • Individuals who wish to obtain certification as clinical psychologists
  • Individuals who are already qualified as clinical psychologists, and who wish to undertake recurrent education so as to acquire more advanced skills and practical capabilities.
2. Skills and capabilities that applicants are expected to have acquired before enrolment:
  • Basic undergraduate-level knowledge and skills
  • Experience and wide-ranging knowledge in relation to clinical psychology and psychology
  • The flexible thinking and decision-making ability needed in order to learn how to provide specialist psychological counseling
3. Basic policy in regard to the selection of applicants for enrolment

Applicants are evaluated on the basis of the requirements for the cultivation of the types of human talent specified in the Graduate School’s educational objectives, including examination in relation to specialist subjects (including subjects relating to clinical psychology and psychology) and foreign languages (English), as well as oral examination, with evaluation of applicants’ specialist knowledge and capabilities, basic English language abilities, whether applicants possess a sense of purpose in relation to becoming a clinical psychologist, and applicants’ overall suitability.
